Computer signed by Woz for sale….

On eBay:
Apple IIgs Woz Limited Edition Personally Autographed by Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple Computer) himself!
I remember when we got our first Apple – also a IIgs – we spent quite a while in the showroom while my father tried to get the price down or something. I remember seeing the Woz signed computer on display, and wondering who he was and why he had a signed computer.
Now I know better – Woz is the man. He’s got a street in San Jose named after him. He’s quite the humanitarian. And a very good role model, too.

Cubing the Power Mac G5 (Op-Ed)
It’s a nice idea and theory, but I don’t see it hapenning – the heat put out by the G5 is considerable, and the heatsinks in it are MASSIVE – I have photos I’ve been meaning to post, but haven’t been able to – maybe I’ll get them off the cameras tonight and put them up.
The fan system is pretty extensive, and the heat sinks, well, like I said, they’re massive. When you look at a dual-processor unit, it’s a considerable amount of surface area – probably as much as the outside of the computer, just on one heat sink.
Sticking all that into a cube…. well, the convection might work for some of the heat, but I think you’d be able to make s’mores with all that heat, if the stick doesn’t burst into flames first.

It was bound to happen…

I always knew it would make an awesome aquarium
You may have seen the MacQuarium – an aquarium made out of a Mac Plus – but this guy is doing it with a G4 Cube. And doing it well – maybe I should do that instead of getting a real Cube….

Mac OS X 10.3: Panther

Apple’s new OS X 10.3: Panther is an EXCELLENT upgrade for anyone using an older G3 machine. I installed it on my laptop (a PowerBook G3 500mhz, aka “Pismo”) and have been very happy ever since.
I’ve been rebooting a lot less. I’ve had fewer problems with multiple applications running – in my case, a LOT of applications. And it’s tons faster than 10.2.6 was.
Expose is pretty cool, and I like all the tweaks they’ve done to the user interface – I think that a fair amount of the speed up is perceptual changes based on their tweaks – information is easier to find and access, meaning less work.

Just when I thought spam couldn’t get any worse…

Help! my Belkin router is spamming me
Belkin still says it’s a good idea, but agrees that the implementation went a bit awry.
I have to agree with “Uh, Clem”, the original poster of the comment: I expect my router to route, not market. I have a couple of D-Link devices for accessing the internet – a wireless router and a broadband device, and I don’t get this kind of crap from them.

What not to do….

If you have a laptop, but you don’t know where the adaptor for your computer is….
DO NOT use someone elses unless you know for damn sure that it will work.
And if, for some reason, it doesn’t fit, then don’t just start pushing it in and try to force it in.

Apple did what?

Proteron software writes:
There is, however, one issue I must raise. It is regarding a specific feature introduced in Panther. As you are aware, keyboard application switching is significantly improved. What is disappointing is that this “improvement” is a near pixel duplication of a Proteron product, LiteSwitch X. And despite the obvious similarities, Proteron has received no recognition or credit.
Well, Apple has “borrowed” software from shareware developers before – the clock in the menu bar in OS 8 and some of the later builds of Watson, for example. Interestingly, Apple did “the right thing” in OS 8 and acknowledged that they had bought the software.
The only reason I can think of for them not doing it now is that they did manage to come up with something themselves that someone else did at the same time – it could happen. I just hope that if Proteron’s software was the impetus, that Apple will come forward and admit to it.

Tuesday’s Lesson of the Day

If you have someone come to your house or business, then it behooves you to PAY THEM when they do work. They came out, worked for X number of hours, and need to be paid for their time. Complaining that they didn’t know what they were doing doesn’t help, because it’s clear that they know a hell of a lot more about what was going on than you did. And the computer now does what you were expecting it to.
So suck it up and right out the check.

Friday’s Lesson of the Day

Never understimate the usefullness or power of a floppy disk. I was supposed to transfer a bunch of files over for a customer who was going from a Mac (OS 9) to a PC (Windows XP). Those of you in the know realize right away one of the obstacles with this type of switch: the Mac and PC don’t speak the same networking languages. If it had been a newer model with USB, I would have planned ahead and brought a USB drive to transfer the files – but it’s not, and I didn’t.
She didn’t care about waiting for the bulk of her files, but she was quite anxious to get her IE favorites moved – something I was able to happily do after re-formatting a floppy to be PC compatible.
