This Old Mac…

The Old Apple Web Server Directory
A pretty fun idea – take your old Mac and put it online. I have the ability to do that, except that my ISP won’t let me host web pages (they block port 80, used by web browsers). They suck.

Uh, I think there’s a mistake…

Best Buy Canada Web Store: Business & Home Solutions: Geek Squad:
Spyware Installation
Apparently, the GeekSquad in Canada is kind enough to install Spyware on your machine when you buy it at BestBuy – and it only costs an extra $129 (Canadian).
It appears that they actually meant “Anti-Spyware Installation,” but come on – it’s just too funny!

Farewell, IE….

Internet Explorer 5 for Mac
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER FOR MAC USERS
In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and will provide no further security or performance updates.
Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple’s Safari.

So it looks like in addition to making it suck since the announcement – i.e. in June 2003 – they’re finally going to take IE offline for good. Well, for the Mac anyway. I’ll miss IE. But only a bit.

A “growing” trend?

Will fix computers for sexual favors
While it’s never happened to me, I can say that I would imagine it’s possible – there’s certainly some people out there that are very, very grateful when their computer is working again.

Play-Doh is more useful than you thought….

Clarkson University Engineer Outwits High-Tech Fingerprint Fraud
Biometrics researcher Stephanie C. Schuckers is researching how to “spoof” – aka fool – things like a fingerprint scanner. Her work, which is funded by the NSF (National Science Foundation), DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and DOD (Department of Defense), is to find ways to spoof the scanners, then figure out how to make it “spoof-proof”.
Mental note: bring Play-Doh on my next trip to the airport….

Key sequences for the Mac

Magical Macintosh Key Sequences
A nice, concise list of various key commands you can use on your Mac for various things – from booting into “Safe Boot” mode to erasing a startup disk (apparently for 7.1 only, so don’t panic…).
Anyway, a very handly list to have around – or at least access to.

Google Talk on the Mac

I realize that most of the Mac using free world already knows about this, but….
You can now use your Google Talk account with iChat. Well, sort of. As I write this there’s a note on the page about a “connection issue” for iChat clients – it appears to an SSL error at the moment – but I did have it working, and nicely.
Hopefully they’ll fix this up sooner rather than later and we’ll be back in business.
