Too much time on the PC….

Man dies after 50 hours of computer games | CNET News.com:
A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.
The family guesses that it was a heart failure brought on by not getting enough rest – big surprise. When I first heard about the story, I figured it was heart failure from ingesting too much caffeine….

Microsoft playing dirty when it comes to satellite images?

Did Microsoft Wipe Apple Off the Map? – Yahoo! News:

WASHINGTON – As software rivals, Microsoft wants to wipe Apple Computer off the map. With Microsoft’s new Web service for satellite photographs, did the world’s largest software company find a way to do exactly that?
Microsoft claims that the photo on their site is the only recent one they have – from 1990 something. Sounds a bit hinky to me….

More proof that Apple’s doing something right

MacDailyNews – Apple and Mac News:
16-percent of computer users are unaffected by viruses, malware because they use Apple Macs
Wednesday, June 15, 2005 – 08:05 PM EST
In a press release on Friday, June 3, 2005, Wizzard Software explained why they believe the Macintosh market is important as they prepare to release AT&T Natural Voices for Apple’s Mac OS X:
According to a statement released earlier this year, Apple Computer reported their 2005 first quarterly revenue and net income as the highest in the history of their company, with 74% revenue growth. Apple shipped 1,046,000 Macintosh units during this quarter, representing a 26% increase in CPU units over the year-ago quarter. According to US News and World Report, Macintosh owners buy 30% more software than their Windows counterparts. Further, Macintosh software comprises over 18% of all software sold, according to the Software and Information Industry Association. In addition, the Software Publishers Association (SPA) estimates that 16 percent of computer users are on Macs.
Also, on Thursday, June 2, 2005, Winn Schwartau, one of the country’s leading experts on information security, infrastructure protection and electronic privacy, summed up his first month’s experiences in his conversion from Windows to Mac:
In the WinTel world, could you do this? Or maybe you should ask, ‘Do I really want all of that paranoia to go away? Do I really want to spend more time enjoying whatever the hell I do on my ‘puter, or maybe I should continue wasting hours every week on security crap that shouldn’t be a problem in the first place? Hey. It’s just a question.

Back in the belly of the beast…

again.
Once more, I’m at a clients offices to deal with yet another rampant virus. This particular one seems to have infested the workstsation I’m using and is trying to spread via the users address book – that’s right, another of the insidious email worms.
What kills me this time is that when I was here last week, the customers had no idea which computer might be infected, nor did they seem to have a clue as to how to figure it out.
A little digging on my part revealed that the emails that everyone else was getting were all ultimately from the same person – a quick look at the headers confirmed this, natch – so then it becomes the matter of me vs. the virus, squaring off on the PC, trying to win and get the dang thing off this system.
I’m glad I don’t have this problem at home…

Modding a Mac Mini, part II

This is the story of the purple mini.
This is the same guy who took his Mini and put it into an ATX case. This one looks much better, and is apparently doing quite well.

Rules of wireless

So, here’s the thing: you spend your hard earned money on a new computer – probably a laptop that’s nice – and you also decide to buy a wireless router to go along with it. It’s nice – you can surf from your bed, or the living room, while eating breakfast – heck, you can even surf the internet from the tub if that’s what you want to do.
So why don’t you bother to protect your investment by setting up the wireless access point properly? If you don’t know enough to setup the encryption options, the least you can do is change the default password – otherwise someone who knows just a little more than you will come along, change all your settings, maybe even lock you out, and you won’t know what hit you.
Another option, of course, is that they’ll just wait until your home and start getting into your files – you didn’t want those photos published on the internet? Too late. You thought your tax info was nice and safe? Not so much.
If you care about this stuff, then you’ll take the time to turn on the WEP or WPA encryption, or at the very least make sure that only certain computers can get onto your wireless network via a control list. It’s worth it in the long run.

Widgets – part of OS X.4, aka Tiger

zaptastic: blueprint for a widget of mass destruction
While I’m all for widgets – the Hula Girl one is especially nice – I have to wonder about the thought process behind making them auto-install. As Stephan.com illustrates, it’s not hard to create one that auto-loads, nor would it be hard to be malicious about it.
Guess I picked the right week to delay installing Tiger until….
